2016 Back Yard Pinot Noir
2016 Dundee Hills Reserve Pinot Noir
93 points – Cellar Selection – Wine Enthusiast
This wine is the inaugural release of our Duck Pond Estate ‘Back Yard’ Pinot Noir from the Dundee Hills – a best barrel selection from our 14-acre estate at the winery, split nearly equally amongst 3 of the 4 clones grown there – Pommard, 777 and Mariafeld (23). We used 30% whole cluster in the ferments, with the resulting wine being handled and moved by gravity then bottled unfiltered, unfined. This blend showcases the beauty of what the Dundee Hills AVA provides, silky luxury with multiple layers and richness. The wine itself has a nose of cherry pie, cinnamon, oolong tea and rose petals, complimented by a palate of lush Bing cherry, and a long, silky finish. This wine can be enjoyed over the next decade
90 Points by Wine Enthusiast. This wine was borne out of the idea of showcasing each of our six unique vineyards – using each of their high notes to make a beautiful melody. To that end, one new barrel was selected from each of the single vineyard blends after they had been crafted, capturing the power of the 2016 vintage in a sturdy frame, and generating a complete and delicious blend from six wonderful parts. This is a burly wine with lots of power and muscle that will be drinking well on its 10th birthday, though will definitely be approachable in the next few years.
Wine Club Exclusive. This “115 clone” Pinot noir shows the hallmarks of a wonderful, ripe vintage. A nose of crushed violets, black raspberry puree and earth leads to a palate of lush black fruit with balanced acidity. This wine will drink well now with a short decant, or will reward with aging over the next 3-5 years.
91 points – Wine Enthusiast
The Hylo Vineyard is our highest elevation vineyard in the South Salem Hills, and contains 74 acres of dry-farmed, old-vine Pommard planted on its own roots. The 2016 Vintage represents the inaugural release for our ‘Hylo Vineyard’ Pinot Noir. Shy at first on the nose, the wine opens up with time in the glass to reveal soft floral aromas, and continues on the palate with cherry and strawberry notes. The refined tannins and bright acid shape this spectacular wine. This subtle wine should build in the bottle over the next five years, but don’t be afraid to open and enjoy it in its youth. 225 cases produced.

Established in 1999, the St. Jory Vineyard is a picturesque site, boasting a spring-fed trout pond, mature oak trees and undulating hills. Although primarily planted to Pinot Gris, a small 16-acre block produces exceptionally concentrated Pinot Noir, perfect for showcasing in a single vineyard bottling. This wine is rich and supple, with notes of black cherry and dark chocolate. Though enjoyable now, it will benefit from extended cellaring. 150 cases produced.
90 Points – Wine Advocate
The youngest of our Willamette Valley vineyard sites, the Willow Creek was planted by the Fries family in 2003. Mature willows line the banks of a small spring-fed creek that trickles through the vineyard; the shallow Jory soil and gentle south slope make this an ideal site for Pinot Noir. Fruit from this vineyard results in wines that are earthy yet surprisingly fruit-forward with balanced acidity and spice. 150 cases produced.

Our Coles Valley Vineyard is a 300 acre vineyard located in the Umpqua Valley. This limited bottling represents the best fruit Duck Pond receives from the property. A combination of all 3 dijon clones (115, 777, 667) grown on the property, this wine is an excellent example of what this warmer site can produce. The nose is full of scents of blueberry crumble, blackberry, candied cherries and hints of vanilla. The full and lush mouth showcases that same fruit, with enormous depth of flavor and a deft touch of oak. Pairs wonderfully with hearty fare, and can be enjoy now with a light decant, or over the next 5-7 years. 275 cases produced
Celebrating a 25th anniversary is truly special – an occasion where we have crafted a wine to say thank you to all the people who have contributed to our past, and to help usher us in to the future. The 25th Anniversary Pinot Gris was crafted with the idea of making an exemplary Pinot Gris in an unexpected style, while showcasing each of our five vineyards that grow the variety and their unique character. This unabashedly full-bodied style of Pinot Gris is rich and textured with a decidedly white floral nose accentuated by the cinnamon and vanilla of the 1/3 new oak. The wonderful tropical notes (St. Jory), stone fruit (Delaney), mineral (Hylo) characters of the Salem vineyards are lifted by the ripe fruit of the Coles Valley Vineyard and framed by the slight tannic quality of the Duck Pond Estate fruit. This special wine is what Pinot Gris can be when slightly re-imagined. Enjoy a bottle now, but get a case and watch it expand in flavor and refine over the next 2-4 years. Bottled unfiltered and unfined.
Extended fermentation and full malolactic fermenation have helped capture the beautiful aromatics of the grape while enhancing the texture of the finished wine. As a beneficiary of longer hang time due to its cooler site, this limited bottling showcases the sleeker, subtler side of Pinot Gris – showing citrus and pear notes on the palate, and hints of honeysuckle on the nose.
Our 2017 Skin Ferment Pinot Gris is a wine that showcases the true nature of what Pinot gris can be outside of the “norm.” Treated in much the same way as our small-lot Pinot noir, we used 25% whole cluster, destemming the remainder, and fermented on skins for 14 days prior to pressing. The resulting wine has excellent texture and tannin structure, with flavors of strawberry and cherry on the palate, while maintaining the floral aromas of Pinot gris on the nose. This wine is an extremely interesting and delicious take on Pinot gris. Bottled unfiltered and unfined. 85 cases produced.
Crafted by Wine Club members, for Wine Club members, this wine is juicy, with bright Bing cherry and ripe red raspberry notes on the nose and palate. Fresh acidity highlights the palate that finishes round, smooth and clean.
Our sixth rendition of our Conservation Cuvée is elegant and refined, with a layered nose of ripe cherry, earth and hint of spice. This complex, yet approachable nose gives way to a palate of fresh baked cherry pie and finishes with clean, bright acidity. Each lot of Conservation Cuvée features a different species of wildlife artwork on the label; this limited-production wine is available only at Duck Pond Cellars. For each bottle sold, Duck Pond donates $5 to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife's Conservation Program.
The 2015 vintage was long and warm, with excellent conditions for ripening Pinot noir at all of our vineyards in the South Salem Hills. This blend is a barrel selection of all four of our South Salem Hills Vineyards – St. Jory, Willow Creek, Delaney and Hylo – to create the 2015 expression of our vineyards located on volcanic red Jory soil. Lithe and silky, this blend is balanced with strawberry, cherry and red raspberry tannins, with soft, round tannin. This wine was aged in French Oak for 14 months before bottling, rounding out the finish and allowing time for oak to integrate better with this elegant wine. Our Coles Valley Vineyard, situated in the Umpqua Valley and surrounding the Coles Valley Church is a truly special site. After the strong, rich Gamay of 2015, it was hard to believe what came out of the fermenter in 2016 – something even more explosive. Our 2016 Gamay Noir is outstanding, with deep purple color that stains the glass. The nose is enjoyable with notes of cranberry, orange peel and fruit leather. The palate is fleshy, carrying though those flavors from the nose, with additional hints of allspice and vanilla on a soft and round skeleton. This will be a great pairing for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, or simply, a cozy, rainy night by the fireplace. Enjoy immediately, though 2-3 years of thoughtful aging will be rewarded with an even more complex wine.

Using fruit from all three of our Pinot Gris producing vineyards in the South Salem Hills, this blend is a tasty combination of stainless steel fermented ‘St. Jory Vineyard’ Pinot Gris, and barrel fermented ‘Delaney Vineyard’ and ‘Hylo Vineyard’ Pinot Gris. The two methods of fermentation led to a complex Pinot Gris, with floral aromatics and a deeply textured palate that showcases notes of white peach, ripe melon and lemon zest.
2016 was a tremendous growing season throughout Oregon, especially at our Coles Valley Vineyard in the Umpqua Valley. For the second year in a row, early bud break, combined with a moderate and long summer allowed for fruit to fully ripen in this vineyard. Our 2016 Pinot Noir is layered and rich, with a nose of candied cherry, spice and sandalwood. The palate is awash with flavors of ripe Bing cherries, red raspberry and soft vanilla notes. The finish is long and plush, with depth and richness, characteristic of a great vintage. #3 wine on Wine Enthusiast's Top 100 Best Buy Wines of 2018 list. 91 Points. "With exceptional texture and detail, this young wine transcends the vast majority of similarly priced Oregon Pinot Gris. Grapefruit, melon and nectarine flavors are there in abundance, with highlights of lemon zest and defining acidity."
This golden amber-colored dessert wine is made from frozen late harvest Semillon grapes sourced from our family's Eastern Washington vineyard. Rich flavors of honey, peach jam and pear marmelade finish with a soft, fruity finish. Try a little drizzled over pound cake with berries or paired with your favorite dessert (we recommend creme brulee or ricotta cheesecake). This also makes a nice partner to nuts and soft cheeses.
